Film Festival Celebrates Concerns, Triumphs of Boston’s Youth
Flix 4 PEACE is a festival of films and videos by and about urban youth in Boston and other Massachusetts cities. The film festival will be held on Saturday, May 31 from 10 AM to 4 PM at the Rabb Auditorium in the Copley Square Branch of the Boston Public Library. The event culminates the city-wide celebration of “May is Peace Month.”
Featured videos include “Jahmol’s Vision,” produced by City Mission Society, the story of Jahmol Norfleet’s friends who carry on Jahmol’s commitment to peace after his tragic death in 2006. PEACEWorks’ “PEACE Fest 2007” video features exciting footage of DMC of Run-DMC, Status Quo and other performers. Boston Police Officer William Willis’ film, “Shot in the ‘Hood,” will introduce a discussion of youth violence. Videos from the Institute of Contemporary Art’s Fast Forward Program include a film of a poem by Sofia Snow, who will also perform at the festival. BOLD Teens’ video features Oakland environmental activist Van Jones delivering the message of “green” jobs for urban youth. In addition to the videos, there will also be live performances and discussions featuring the youth themselves.
Some of these films have been made by professional film-makers; others have been made by young people learning their craft. “What all these films have in common,” says Rev. June R. Cooper, City Mission Society’s Executive Director, “is a passionate desire to engage constructively with their community. We feel this is a critical opportunity to celebrate youth creativity and show youth that peace is a choice that they can make.”
