Faith and Community

City Mission Society has three focus areas for its programming:Homelessness Prevention, Youth Peace Promotion, and Faith and Community Engagement. While addressing distinct issues, the three focus areas overlap to form a coherent whole.

Through its Faith and Community Engagement focus area, CMS invites religious congregations and other groups to take part in service projects that challenge their notion of “who is my neighbor” while they work and learn in the neighborhoods of Boston.

Boston Urban Outreach brings together groups of youth and adults to perform service projects, worship together, and learn first-hand about social justice issues. These projects seek to dispel stereotypes and to provide opportunities for reflection on their service. Day-long, overnight and extended stay programming is available. Groups stay at a local inner-city church, gaining a unique opportunity to develop new relationships and experience what it means to serve others. Boston Urban Outreach has served more than 10,000 people with the help of over 1,500 volunteers from all over the country! Participants learn how they can become agents of change to impact social issues. Additionally, speakers are often invited to share their in-depth experience with the group.

The Christmas Shop brings the joy of the holiday season to over fifteen hundred children and adults in the Boston area. Each year more than 200 volunteers from over 45 churches gather and distribute over 10,000 toys and clothing items directly to CMS recipients and other families in crisis. Volunteers help to collect, sort and distribute all of these gifts.

Martin Luther King Day of Service and Learning invites volunteers of all ages to honor the memory of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by offering their services at a dozen or more sites in and around Boston. Make it a day on not a day off!

"What gives me peace is when I go outside and feel the wind blow across my gentle, happy face And the sun shining on the Beautiful and colorful flowers The animals are happy eating their food And the birds are flying in the blue sky And children playing, picking flowers and having fun That’s what makes me happy."

Picture and poem were created by elementary-school youth in CMS arts programs.
